Calcium is vital to plant health. It regulates opening and closing of the stomata (leaf pores), removes toxins from the tissue and contributes to the development of shoots and roots, making the plant more resistant to unwelcome invaders. Many acidic soils do not contain enough calcium to support prolific plant growth. When soil pH is below 6.0, plants may show signs of calcium deficiency such as leaf yellowing, retarded growth of roots and shoots, die-back of growing tips and premature death of older leaves. Most indoor herbs do best at tempertures between 65 and 75 degrees F, but are adaptable to the somewhat lower temps near the windows at night.
